Norman’s Significance

Norman’s action in the Olympics is extremely important because it provides an example to people of all races of what we should do in the face of injustice.

When some people that have not been historically oppressed are exposed to issues of social justice, they perceive it as a problem that is not their’s. They cannot relate to it, and feel they have no place in the conversation.

Racism is a form of injustice, and injustice should be extinguished wherever it exists.

Norman’s whiteness plays an important role, as it shows that it is a human rights injustice when recognized by another race. When only one race complains then it seems as if it is not an actual problem, but when it is seen from a different point of view it becomes a real issue. We can’t ignore that usually people would pay more attention to someone of a lighter skin tone, that’s why Norman’s whiteness is essential to the fight for social justice.
