One of the passages that stood out to me showcased the severe struggle Katniss is going through when it comes to trusting Peeta. “And then he gives me a sweet smile that seems so genuinely sweet with just the right touch of shyness that unexpected warmth rushes through me. A warning bell goes off in my head. Don’t be so stupid. Peeta is planning how to kill you, remind myself. He is luring you in to make you easy prey. The more likable he is, the more deadly he is” (Collins, 68). On the one hand, this is a boy how has helped her in her time of need and who she is now going to try and kill. On the other hand, this boy will also try his best to kill her to survive. Trust can often be seen as black and white. Either you completely trust a person with your life or you wouldn’t even tell them what you had for breakfast. But the reality is that there are different levels of trust. For certain people, trust works better in levels. When I was younger, I would often trust everyone completely but later came to the realization that the key was to trust only few people wholeheartedly while other gain your trust little by little. For Katniss, the people that she trusts completely are Prim, Gale, and surprisingly Rue. But Peeta seems to be an enigma to her. When she thinks she could trust him, she scolds herself and sees him as an enemy once more. However, as the book progresses, he saves her time and time again. When he saves her from the Careers, she seems to be debating whether it was genuine or not and can’t seem to make up her mind about him. Her trust seems to be black and white in the beginning but her situation with Peeta changes this. She starts to trust him little by little until she can literally trust him with her life. The theme of trust is important because it could very well be the line between life and death. If for any moment Katniss were to trust the wrong person, it could mean her death and had Peeta not put some trust in the Careers, no matter how much they were using him, they could have killed him early on. The trust between Peeta and Katniss is what lead to their survival as this trust is what lead to them agreeing to commit public suicide. They had to trust that they would do the same thing and that one would not back down on their agreement.
