The idea of freedom and its many sub-categories is expressed in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. It can be seen that there are many types of freedom: religion, speech, etc. The attached image shows an example of freedom of speech as expressed in article XI which expresses the significance of the freedom to communicate whether it be written, spoken or printed. The images represents freedom of speech through print as newspapers are a platform to communicate and write freely. However, it also states that abuse of the freedom of communication shall be punishable by law. This begs the question of what should be considered abuse of freedom of communication and how harsh should the punishment be?
I think your question on the freedom of communication is very interesting to consider. I believe that this poses the question as to how we define freedom and to what extent our freedoms shall reach. The concept of being punished for the abuse of our freedoms seems like a rather difficult concept to make concrete for this relies on the agreement for the definition of freedom abuse and what one may consider acceptable punishment or not. Humans are given these rights upon birth and no one may take those away but they can and should be kept in check as too much freedom may produce anarchy and chaos.
Hi Jacky,
You made some really good points here, such as difficulty in defining what is the freedom of communication and the punishment for abusing this freedom. I think freedom of communication could mean that people in a country are allowed and won’t be oppressed to voice anything, even if these opinions sounds radical or extreme to some people. However, I don’t think this is ideal because people can misuse this freedom e.g Donald Trump made remarks openly which instigated hate and violence in the country. This confirms your last point that this freedom should be kept in check as too much freedom can produce chaos, which it did in this case.
