Dr. Wolfgang Junger
Principal Investigator
Dr. Wolfgang Junger began his career studying chemistry at the Vienna University of Technology, then he started his own labs at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard and at UCSD. His research has the overarching goal of improving the clinical outcome of intensive care patients with acute and chronic inflammatory diseases. Through close collaborations with clinical partners, his laboratory has been able to contribute to a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the immune response, which has revealed potential new therapeutic targets to support the care of critical care patients. With his new projects he hopes to delve into the question how ATP signaling in the elderly, adults, and children affects their ability to fight diseases.

Joshua Delfin
Joshua is a microbiology student at UC San Diego, interested in researching the chemical mechanisms underlying immune cell signaling and interactions. He hopes to pursue an MD/PhD, specializing in immunology and infectious disease research.

Miguel Ybanez is a human biology student at UC San Diego who is interested in studying low ATP levels and poor neutrophil activation in children which may affect infections. He hopes to attend medical school in the near future in order to pursue a career as a physician.

Julian Curatolo
Research Assistant
Julian is a UCSD class of 2025 pharmacological chemistry B.S. major and general biology minor. He has previous research experience as a lab assistant helping study the molecular neurobiology of Alzheimer’s disease in a neuroscience lab at Sanford Burnham Prebys. Now at Junger Lab, Julian researches purinergic signaling in disease progression. In the coming years, Julian hopes to attend medical school to pursue a career in both research and clinical practice as a medical doctor.

Anjana Narasimhan
Anjana is a general biology student at UC San Diego, graduating in 2026. She has previous research experience at the UCR School of Medicine, where she conducted clinical interviews and studied the storytelling of medical professionals to address imposter syndrome. Now, at Junger Lab, Anjana is focused on studying differences in neutrophil activity between children and adults, and how aging affects immune responses, inflammation, and disease progression. She plans to pursue MD programs with a particular interest in surgery, while also advocating for public health and medical policy in government roles. Anjana hopes to bridge the gap between medical research, clinical practice, and public health advocacy

Lia is a biochemistry student with a minor in general biology at UC San Diego, set to graduate in 2025. She previously conducted research at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where she investigated hematocrit levels in healthy children vs. those with congenital heart defects. Now a member at Junger Lab, Lia is eager to expand her research experience by contributing to ongoing projects in immunometabolism. She plans to apply to MD programs, with a particular interest in pediatrics or gynecology and looks forward to a career centered on patient care.
