Letter to the Reader #1: Background Info

What is society like here, in the year 3022? There has been a lot of change around here in the past 1000 years and things have changed beyond recognition.

My name’s Erique and I live in a utopian socialist state. Unlike in communism, where property and the means of production, or capital, are owned and controlled by the government, in socialism, all citizens share the economic resources of the nation equally. The society I live in follows the utopian socialist structure Frederick Engels details in his famous work “Socialism: Utopian and Scientific”. Specifically, in the system where I live, all capital is publicly owned. Profits from everything are divided up and distributed equally to all of the working members of society. Money isn’t hoarded by the wealthy upper class; there is no upper class. There is only one class, and it encompasses everyone. We are all equal and we are all happy.

Given the fundamental changes to our society, the music industry has also changed. There is still profit in making music but that profit is divided equally among everyone in society. There are no record labels and conglomerates controlling and manipulating musicians in order to maximize profits; musicians are independent and have no limit on what they can create. Music is more creative and with fewer restrictions, musicians have precisely tuned their trade to perfection.
