Norman, Smith and Carlos sported buttons on their uniforms promoting the Olympic Project for Human Rights campaign. An organization founded in October 1967 by Harry Edwards. The purpose of this organization was to use the Olympic Games as a platform to promote racial equality. Norman borrowed a badge from a member of the US Rowing Team and agreed to wear one of the buttons during the ceremony as a sign of solidarity.
