In the Spring of 1983, the History Department instituted a new upper division course entitled ‘Asian American History’, and appointed professor Ling-chi Wang as a visiting associate professor to teach it. Student response was most positive. Students (enrollment: 38), Asian American and otherwise, found the course content informative, meaningful, and stimulating. In addition, Chinese Studies majors welcomed the course as an important supplement to their education, as it added a new dimension to their understanding of Chinese history and US-China relations. As a result, many students expressed a strong desire to see similar courses offered on a regular basis. In recognition of the educational value of course offerings with an Asian American perspective, a number of concerned faculty members met informally and drafted a proposal to create a core three courses on Asian Americans.
