In this resolution, Associated Students of UCSD, the student government body, participated and support the community effort to establish an Asian American Studies program at UCSD. In addition to explicitly demanding one additional FTE to hire for the purpose of funding an Asian American Studies course, the resolution expressed the student body’s recognition of the needs and demands of Asian Americans and greater community at UCSD and visions for a formal Asian American Studies program/curriculum. Not only did Associated Students highlight the urgent, pressing issue of the FTE allocation and the stakes at hand while administration discussed and began to decide on the allocation, but Associated Students also gathered signatures of support from over 20 faculty members across numerous fields. It is also important to note that this occurred during a time before computers and the Internet, so this resolution was written with immense care and time on a typewriter, and the efforts to meet and gather signatures from over 20 faculty members across numerous fields as well as meet and communicate with other students and community members also took much time and energy. This resolution reveals in the immense amount of energy, passion, and drive from the students in wanting to make Asian American Studies a reality.
