These rules and expectations are to make the classroom a safe space for everyone to learn from each other.

  1. Critique ideas, not people. You might not agree with everything that people say but remember that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and has every right to express it.
  2. Take space, make space. Your participation in class is encouraged and valued. Just be sure to let others have the time to articulate their ideas!
  3. Use “I” statements. Use “I” instead of the royal “we” to avoid generalizing views and experiences.
  4. What is said here stays here, what is learned here leaves here. Hearing other people’s stories is a really great way to learn. But keep in mind that these stories are personal and sometimes not meant to be shared beyond the classroom.
  5. Practice active listening. Give whoever is speaking your full attention. It’s the decent thing to do.

Hello fellow Marshall students! I’m Megan, your discussion leader for this Fall Quarter.

I am a fourth year International Studies major with an emphasis in History and a Human Development minor. Thanks to the interdisciplinary nature of these two programs, I am very lucky to have been able to indulge in my diverse range of interests across the social sciences/arts & humanities, from communications to political science to education studies. So if you have any questions about these fields, ask away! If you’re in STEM, never fear! I still can help you navigate resources that will be super helpful to your time here. As your first year experience discussion leader, I want to help you make a fun and successful transition into life as a UCSD student.
