We recently purchased an Asus Zenfone which offers IR emitters and sensors as a means to scan and track the real world. There are some apps that allow you to do real time scanning. Each of these point clouds took about 2 minutes to make. I’ve still got a lot of tweaking to do to see how good I can make them, but I think these kinds of scans might be really helpful for research in the field, as you can scan samples and share easily from a phone, without any additional computing infrastructure.
