Opportunities

Collaboration and networking: If you are doing research focused on substance use among older adults or adults with chronic medical disease we would love to connect and/or collaborate.

In addition, Dr. Han is a co-chair two special interest groups: The American Geriatrics Society Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Use (ATOD) Among Older Adults Special Interest Group & The Association for Multidisciplinary Education and Research in Substance use and Addiction (AMERSA) Geriatric and Older Adults Special Interest Group.

For trainees and students: We love mentoring and working with trainees interested in geriatrics and/or addiction medicine research.

UCSD Medical Student Training in Aging Research (MSTAR) Program: The MSTAR program at UCSD (PIs: Benjamin Han, Ellen Lee, Alison Moore), funded by the National Institute on Aging, provides medical students with experience in aging-related research and geriatrics. The Principle Investigators in our lab have extensive experience mentoring MSTAR students working in the area of substance use and older adults, resulting in several abstracts and oral presentations at national meetings and co-authorship on peer-reviewed manuscripts.

Other research opportunities: There is the opportunity to participate in research electives for medical and graduate students, depending on their host institution’s policies. Please reach out for information.
