Did anyone make it to the the Tijuana Zine Festival on Saturday? I tagged along with my friend who was covering the event for San Diego CityBeat, and was simply amazed at the richness of artistic expression we found there. Dozens of artists and writers from Tijuana, San Diego, and even as far away as Germany were showing off their zines, posters, and other creative projects while attendees ooo-ed and ah-ed. There were even a handful of writers and artists from Grossmont College and Mesa College! They they told me they were really excited about how the creative communities in San Diego and Tijuana are collaboratively growing. We even talked about how KNIT might be used to enable more San Diego and Tijuana creators to showcase their work and network with one another.

It made me curious about the creative practices and aspirations of our own group. Who here is a practicing or aspiring artist, writer, or musician? Do you see these activities as separate or complementary to your educational endeavors? What are ways that our city and our schools might better support these practices? Could you imagine KNIT playing a role?

Feel free to answer in the comments, or create a separate post about your creative engagements. I’d love to hear from you!
