I had never taken a class quite like HIUS120D, nor participated in a project like the Race and Oral History Project. I was not sure of what to expect going into the course because it seemed like a big workload with many components, however I truly enjoyed the time spent together and everything I learned in class, with our community partners, and with conducting our interviews. I had the opportunity to interview Monica Gonzalez, the Student Life Operations Specialist at the Raza Resource Centro at UCSD. I feel like I have gained so much insight from my experience in this class and with the interview process. I had never conducted an interview with someone that I was not already close with before, and it was so interesting to learn about someone’s life and be able to document and share it with others. I loved learning about her life, how she felt going through her time in college, and what her goals are with her work every day. Something that I took away from the interview was the genuine care and love that Monica has for the people around her, and how she wants to build such a loving, supportive community with her work. We are so lucky to have people like this on our campus at UCSD! I’m happy with my interview process and with my results. I have so much appreciation for our professor Dr. Luis Alvarez for his genuine kindness, understanding, and dedication to our class and this project. I’m so thankful to have had the opportunity to participate in this class and such a special project as the Race and Oral History Project!
