I struggled to find people to interview in the beginning. The most obvious to me was to not interact the little kids because it’s probably hard to get anything out of them, so I went to middle and high schoolers. I explained to two high schoolers about my interview and they gave me a “I’m not interested” look. Nevertheless, I continued explaining to them it was and they gave me very short answers like yes or no. It was annoying to go through that but at least I learned.
Luckily, that same day I was playing this competitive online game with my cohort as well as the middle school class. It was unlucky for them because I am a very competitive person and ended up getting first place two times. This volunteer experience has brought me back to the days I have had middle school and although it wasn’t too far in the past, I still reminisce those days.
My interviewee, Grace Hernandez, was in the classroom spectating our games on that day. She needed math tutoring and I was able to tutor her in math. She then agreed to the interview. Grace told me in the city, Barrio Logan, there are the typical ice cream trucks that go around the neighborhoods selling ice cream and snacks and items that kids love to snack on. What was shocking was that Grace said there were other types of ice cream trucks. These other ice cream trucks would sell weed to the addicts in the neighborhood. She also tells that she goes to Coronado Middle School in Coronado, but the neighborhood there is safer than the neighborhood in Barrio Logan. It is mindblowing and sad that the two neighborhoods can be that different even though they are only separated by a bridge.
