During the interview between me and Dr. Shaun Travers, we basically went through the story of his life from his early life to his current professional journey. My preconception about oral history before going into this class is just to ask some questions and write a quick summary, but in actuality it was so much different than I expected. I had goosebumps listening to Dr. Travers’ story. From our interview, I learned a lot of new things that I didn’t know about history and different regions in our country. His story interconnects with one another, these insightful details really made the oral story interesting. I hope to do more oral history interviews like this in the future. One thing that surprised me the most is that a lot of these people have interesting and powerful stories to tell, but they don’t have an outlet to do so, and what we are doing in this class can be really important to preserve these stories and events for the future students or historians. From this interview, I learned more than just the story of the interviewee but also the history of the US. One interesting thing that I learned from the interview is that Dr. Travers is that he was brought up in three different places during his early stages in life, going from a small town in Illinois to Orange county to St. Louis, these 3 different locations all have different race and political environments, and growing up in these different environments allowed him to see the world through different lenses.
