Today Casa was not as full as the day with the doll making. I went to the youth center, but there were not any kids there yet since students get out of school at 4 and I was there from 12-3. I’ve been really enjoying my time as Casa and look forward to coming but it’s always hard to find time to come all the way down to San Ysidro. Most of their events throughout the week are after 4, but because of my schedule the only time that I can are in the morning or afternoon. I was, however, talking to Mirna. She was telling me about all the things going on at the youth center. It’s probably one of the more active sites. In the youth center they provide students with tutoring and different after school activities. It was also really cool to hear how more social justice/activist workshops are being implemented into their programs. That’s an amazing way to keep students interested in things that matter to them and their community. They’re not only giving students resources to combat injustices but also education folks on why these injustices even exist. I also offered my help with these workshops since I have a lot of experience through MEChA with workshops. I’m always more and more excited to work when them when I stop by.
