I went to Casa for an art making project. They (the children) made stuffed dolls that looked like them. I think that art project was a very beautiful one. Representation especially in mainstream media toys, for black and brown youth is slim to none. So to have them make their own rather than wait for someone else to do it is very powerful. The kids as well had a sun time. It was nice to see how they interact with each other as well as with the volunteers. Most of them are very friendly and comfortable around the volunteers and staff. You could tell that these kids go to Casa on a regular basis. The art project was making dolls that looked like them so it was really cool to see how the kids saw themselves. Some kids tried to be very realistic while others gave themselves pink hair or a pet monkey. Overall it was very very fun.
