My art project is a photo series inspired by my interviewee, Heather Garcia, as well as my site partner Casa Familiar. When I started my project, I knew I wanted to take pictures, but I wasn’t quite sure what of. Casa Familiar is all about community and being able to give back to the people. In my interview with Heather, we spoke a lot about the immigrants in San Ysidro and how accepting they are. They have such a close knit community because they understand what each other is going through seeing as they have also been in that position at one point. I remember, one day, when I was walking in San Ysidro, everyone greeted me in passing. For me, that was a little uncommon. Surely, I might have smiled at someone, but for the most part, I kept to myself. The community in San Ysidro is so friendly and always look out for one another. In the end, I decided to take photos of the community. I wanted others to be able to see them and feel as if they are on a journey through San Ysidro.
