Kayla Burner, professor at Southwestern College and member of Detention Resistance. She discussed her draw to the collective from the ethics of borders, and dentition centers to the goals for the collective. She also discussed the importance of Detention Resistance, not just for their activism, but on the importance of an abolitionist approach. She also mentioned her favorite moments of the collective and how we as students aiding Detention Resistance can focus on our mental health. As it transcribing what goes on in the Otay Mesa Detention Center can be very emotional. However, the work being done is so rewarding. Kay’s interview was insightful and taught me so much about myself and my purpose in working with the collective. It exemplified the importance of this work, coming from a family of immigrants.
