Dear Future Student,

Be proactive. Don’t wait for the professor or the admin in your organization to tell you to do something. Remember that you are here to serve a community, not your grades. As such, place your focus on how to best advance the goals of the community organization. Even if you do not get to work with your top pick of the organizations, know that whoever you are working for is a leader for change in San Diego. You are doing great work and remember to look at the forest from the trees. Who you are working for and what you are doing is so much greater than you and I say that in the best way possible. Love what you are doing and love who you are doing it for. Make sure to create a space where you enjoy coming in to help out. If not, it’s going to be a long and hard quarter. Be grateful for the space you are in because you are surrounded by people who want to make a change and are making a change. Take advantage and get into the community because La Jolla and UCSD are not communities. They are spaces practically barricaded off to the rest of San Diego. It’s a wonderful opportunity that I hope you enjoy as much as I did.

Warmly,

Lorena Gonzalez
