San Diego is a major hub of military and defense activity. The region is marked by military bases, defense and aerospace industries, as well as detention centers, border checkpoints, and the border wall. As these oral histories reveal, the military has brought many refugees, migrants, and military workers to the region. They have also exacerbated criminalization and police violence, as militarized forms of control continue to disproportionately target Black and Brown refugee and migrant communities.
